Antibiotics are valuable tools, but they are over-prescribed. An excess of antibiotics leads to resistance which ultimately reduces their effectiveness and makes us susceptible to very serious infections. Up to 50% of antibiotic prescriptions for acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are inappropriate. Overuse of antibiotics is a major healthcare problem leading to antibiotic resistance, patient morbidity, and unnecessary expense. Attempts to decrease the overuse of antibiotics in ARIs have met with limited success. Much of the Usability Lab’s work relates to Antibiotic Stewardship, the process of taking active measures to promote responsible use of antibiotics.
